Followers

People who follow you on ShoutOrbit are emailed when your Orbit opens for bidding, and can stop at any time.

A follower is someone signed in to ShoutOrbit who pressed Follow on your page. When bidding opens on one of your Orbits, every follower gets an email telling them, with a link to bid. It's the one list on ShoutOrbit that grows with each Orbit you run.

How it works

  1. Someone follows you from your creator page. Following needs a ShoutOrbit account, so a visitor who isn't signed in is asked to sign in first.
  2. Bidding opens on your Orbit. Each follower is emailed: your Orbit's title, your promise, the link, and when bidding closes.
  3. Bidding is about to close. Followers get one last-call email 6 hours before the deadline.
  4. You see who follows you on the Public page in your dashboard: each follower's name, handle and the date they followed.

Stopping the emails

Every email has a one-click link to stop hearing about your Orbits. A follower can also press Following on your page to unfollow. Either way, receipts for bids they've already placed still reach them, because those aren't marketing.

Why it works this way

Why following needs an account. Signing in proves the email address is real and belongs to the person. We never mail an address someone typed in for somebody else.

Why you can't see their email addresses. Following you is a relationship with you on ShoutOrbit, not a mailing list you've bought. Your followers hear from you through your Orbits, and they can leave whenever they like.

What can go wrong

  • Your payouts aren't set up when bidding opens. The email still goes out, but nobody can bid until your payouts are ready. Set them up before bidding opens, or announce the Orbit with a later opening time.
  • Your account is suspended. No follower emails go out for your Orbits while it is.
